A network video recorder is not selected by channel count alone. The recorder must accept the combined video bandwidth, support the required camera features and provide enough storage for the retention policy. A system may have free channels but still be constrained by incoming bandwidth or drive capacity.
Match channels and incoming bandwidth
Count current cameras and planned additions, then check the recorder’s maximum supported channels and incoming bandwidth. Confirm compatibility with the camera models and any desired analytics or audio functions. Leave practical capacity for future cameras without buying a recorder far beyond the project’s needs.
Calculate drive capacity and redundancy
Estimate average bitrate for each camera, daily recording hours and retention days. Verify the supported number and type of drives, and decide whether redundancy is required. RAID or similar protection can reduce the effect of a drive failure but is not a substitute for all forms of backup.
Plan access and maintenance
Restrict administrator accounts, set accurate time and verify that recordings can be searched and exported. Monitor disk health and test playback after installation. Review video recorders and camera products alongside the full camera list and storage calculation.
