Power over Ethernet Switches: Calculating PoE Budget for Cameras and WiFi

Power over Ethernet carries both data and electrical power through compatible Ethernet cabling. It can simplify installations for wireless access points, IP cameras and some phones, but the switch must support the required PoE standard and supply enough total power for all connected devices.

Calculate the total power demand

List every powered endpoint and its maximum expected draw, not only its typical consumption. Add a sensible allowance for future devices and compare the result with the switch’s total PoE budget. A switch can have PoE on every port while still being unable to deliver the maximum rating to every port simultaneously.

Check standards, cable runs and ports

Confirm whether devices require IEEE 802.3af, 802.3at, 802.3bt or a proprietary method. Use appropriate Ethernet cable and respect channel length limits. High-power endpoints and long or poor-quality runs deserve particular attention because voltage drop and cabling faults can cause instability.

Plan for resilience

A switch powering all access points and cameras becomes a shared point of failure. Consider the impact of its reboot or power loss, protect it with an appropriately sized UPS and document which ports serve critical devices. Compare PoE switches and power equipment against the full load calculation.
