How to Choose a Business Router in Tanzania: Throughput, VPN and Failover

A business router connects local networks to external networks and applies rules that help control traffic. Choosing one only by the maximum speed printed on a box can lead to disappointment because VPN encryption, firewall inspection, concurrent sessions and multiple internet connections all affect real performance.

Estimate actual traffic requirements

Consider the internet service speed, the number of users, cloud applications, video meetings and large file transfers. Look for performance figures relevant to the features you will enable. A router that can route traffic quickly with minimal processing may deliver less throughput when advanced security or VPN functions are active.

Consider remote access and resilience

If staff need secure access from outside the office, check supported VPN methods, user management and logging. Where business continuity matters, dual-WAN or mobile failover may keep selected services available during an ISP outage, but failover needs configuration and testing. It cannot compensate for every upstream or power failure.

Check support and future needs

Confirm firmware update availability, configuration backup options and whether the router supports required VLANs and routing features. Keep management interfaces off public access unless a secure, justified method is in place. Compare routers and gateways based on the services the organisation actually needs.
