UPS Systems for Network Equipment: How to Estimate Backup Runtime

A UPS can keep routers, switches, access points, recorders and other essential devices running during a short power interruption. The required size depends on the actual load, desired runtime and the UPS’s output capability. A larger advertised VA figure does not automatically guarantee long backup time.

Calculate the protected load

List the wattage of each device to be connected and total the expected load. Check both the UPS watt and VA ratings, because power factor affects the relationship between them. Include equipment that must stay online together, but avoid connecting non-essential loads that shorten runtime.

Choose a realistic runtime target

Decide whether the goal is to bridge brief interruptions, maintain connectivity for a defined period or allow a controlled shutdown. Battery condition, temperature, age and load affect real runtime, so use the manufacturer’s runtime chart and leave a margin rather than relying on a best-case estimate.

Plan testing and battery replacement

Place the UPS where ventilation and maintenance access are suitable. Test operation periodically, monitor battery warnings and record replacement dates. Do not assume the UPS will protect against every electrical problem or substitute it for appropriate grounding and surge protection. Browse UPS and power management products using the load and runtime figures.
