Access Point Placement: How to Improve WiFi Coverage Without Buying More Devices

Adding more access points is not always the best way to fix poor Wi-Fi. A device hidden behind a television, installed inside a metal cabinet or placed at one end of a long building may struggle even if its advertised range looks impressive. Placement should be based on coverage, interference and user demand.

Move from guesswork to a floor plan

Mark the rooms where people use devices, the likely access-point locations and obstacles such as concrete walls, lift shafts and metal partitions. Test coverage in problem areas and consider whether one well-placed access point could replace an obstructed or poorly positioned unit.

Balance overlap and capacity

Access points need enough overlap for client movement, but excessive overlap on the same channels can increase contention. Busy rooms may require more capacity than quiet corridors. Coordinate channel assignment and transmit power instead of turning every setting to maximum.

Validate with real devices

Walk the site using representative phones, laptops and business applications. Measure connection quality and performance at peak occupancy, then retest after moving equipment. If the site still needs additional coverage, explore wireless access points with a revised placement plan.
