Network Segmentation with VLANs: Separating Staff, Guest WiFi and CCTV

A VLAN divides a switched network into separate logical broadcast domains. Used with appropriate routing and firewall rules, VLANs can help keep guest devices away from business computers and limit the reach of connected cameras or building systems. Creating VLAN IDs alone does not automatically provide security.

Design a clear network map

List the groups that need separation, such as staff, guests, cameras, voice devices and management interfaces. Assign each group a documented VLAN and IP subnet, and identify which services must cross between them. Avoid creating many segments without a clear operational purpose.

Configure every part of the path

The switch ports, trunk links, router or layer-three switch, wireless SSIDs and firewall rules must agree on the design. An access port usually carries a single intended VLAN, while trunks carry selected VLANs between devices. Misconfigured tagging can leave devices isolated or expose traffic unexpectedly.

Test access in both directions

Verify that each group can reach required services and cannot reach systems it should not access. Document exceptions such as printing, DNS or video recording. Keep configuration backups and apply changes during a controlled maintenance window. Review managed switches and routers for VLAN support before planning the implementation.
