Electronic access control helps organisations manage who can enter selected doors and when. A dependable installation combines credentials, readers, door hardware, controller logic, power and a procedure for issuing or revoking access. Choosing a reader alone does not define a complete system.
Choose credentials and permissions
Cards, PINs, mobile credentials and biometric methods each have different convenience, privacy and administration considerations. Define access groups by role and location, and remove credentials promptly when staff or contractors no longer require entry. Avoid giving every user permanent unrestricted access.
Match the door and safety requirements
Confirm the lock type, door construction, exit hardware and behaviour during power failure. Some doors need fail-safe behaviour for life safety, while others may require secure locking; the correct design depends on the door and applicable requirements. Coordinate with qualified installers and relevant safety professionals.
Secure the system itself
Protect administrator accounts, maintain event logs and limit who can change permissions. Consider how the system integrates with CCTV and whether network-connected controllers need a dedicated segment. Review access control products alongside the door hardware, cabling and power requirements.
