Choosing Fibre SFP Modules for Switches and Routers

An SFP or related pluggable transceiver lets a compatible switch or router connect over a particular fibre or copper medium. Choosing the right module requires more than matching the connector shape: data rate, wavelength, fibre type, distance and device compatibility all matter.

Verify the port and speed

Check the host device documentation for supported transceiver types and port speeds. A module that physically fits may not be supported, and a port may require configuration to operate at the intended rate. Confirm whether the link is 1 GbE, 10 GbE or another supported speed.

Match both ends of the optical link

The transceivers should use compatible wavelengths and media, with sufficient optical budget for the route. Single-mode and multimode optics are not interchangeable simply because both use LC connectors. For BiDi links, the paired modules must use complementary transmit and receive wavelengths.

Avoid common installation errors

Inspect and clean fibre connectors, protect the unused ports and verify link status at both ends. If the link stays down, check compatibility, polarity, speed settings and optical levels before replacing unrelated equipment. Browse networking accessories and confirm model specifications before ordering.
